What to Expect

The state’s weather bureau has issued a yellow alert for Uttarakhand covering the period from October 6 through October 11. During these days the mountainous regions will see a blend of rain, thunderstorms and even early snowfall at the highest points, while the lower‑lying plains are projected to remain largely dry.

Snowfall Forecast

Weather Director Dr. C.S. Tomar notes that snow is likely to start in areas above 4,200 metres between October 6 and 8. From October 9 to 11 the snow‑covered band should descend to roughly 3,800 metres, bringing a noticeable chill to the upper valleys.

Hill Districts Under Warning

The alert specifically targets seven hill districts:

  • Chamoli
  • Nainital
  • Pithoragarh
  • Bageshwar
  • Almora
  • Rudraprayag
  • Uttarkashi

These zones may experience gusty winds of 30‑40 km/h, frequent thunderstorms and a heightened risk of lightning strikes.

Rain and Thunderstorm Outlook

Scattered to moderate showers are expected across several mountain stretches, accompanied by occasional gusts, thunder and lightning. The meteorological department also forecasts moderate rain on October 6‑7 for Nainital, Champawat, Almora, Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri, with thunderstorms likely to accompany the precipitation.

Temperature Shifts

Where snow settles, temperatures will drop markedly in the high‑altitude zones. In contrast, the lower plains should enjoy relatively milder and drier weather throughout the alert window.
