Dehradun. Monsoon activity has intensified once more across Uttarakhand, prompting the Meteorological Centre to issue heavy‑rain warnings for several regions between 26 and 28 September. Forecasts call for heavy to very heavy showers, with isolated bouts of extremely heavy rain on the 26th and 27th, leading to red and orange alerts in a number of districts.
The worsening weather has also brought fresh snowfall to the high‑altitude shrine of Hemkund Sahib, sending temperatures there sharply lower.
Dr. C. S. Tomar, Chief Scientist at the Meteorological Centre, explained that a depression over southern Odisha and adjoining parts of southern Chhattisgarh is tracking north‑northwest and could amplify rainfall across Uttarakhand on 26‑27 September.
Red Alert Across Five Districts on 26 September
Red alerts have been declared for Bageshwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar, where heavy to very heavy rain—and occasional extremely heavy bursts—are expected.
Dehradun, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Almora are under orange alerts because of the likelihood of heavy to very heavy precipitation.
Rain Continues on 27 September
On the 27th, Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar and Pauri are projected to receive heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated pockets possibly seeing extremely heavy showers; a red alert remains in force for these districts.
Additional orange alerts cover Nainital, Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag, where heavy to very heavy rain will be accompanied by winds of 30‑40 km/h.
More Showers Expected on 28 September
Rainfall is set to persist on the 28th, especially in parts of Uttarkashi, Haridwar and Dehradun. Scattered thunderstorms and intense rain bursts may affect isolated locations.
Risk of Landslides and Flash Floods
The centre warned that light to moderate landslides and falling rocks could occur in vulnerable hill zones during the heavy downpours. Road networks may be blocked, river levels could rise quickly, and flash floods may develop in low‑lying streams.
Temporary structures, bridges and construction sites are also at risk, and essential services such as electricity and drinking‑water supply could face interruptions in some areas.
Impact on Char Dham Yatra and Helicopter Operations
The persistent rain may disrupt the Char Dham pilgrimage, mountaineering activities and helicopter services. Pilgrims and tourists are urged to stay vigilant, avoid travel through risk‑prone zones unless absolutely necessary, and steer clear of swollen rivers, streams and drains.
Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during intense rain spells and to avoid crossing areas affected by active landslides.
