On Monday, the Supreme Court seized suo motu jurisdiction over a spate of alleged rape and sexual assault incidents that have surfaced across the Delhi‑NCR region, including a reported assault on a 16‑year‑old girl aboard a moving sleeper bus and a separate episode involving a minor in a public park.
A two‑judge bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K. Vinod Chandran expressed deep concern, invoking the haunting memory of the 2012 Nirbhaya tragedy. The judges highlighted that these fresh allegations underscore serious shortcomings in public safety, policing, and administrative oversight within the national capital territory.
The bench observed that crimes occurring in seemingly ordinary venues such as buses and parks expose glaring gaps in lighting, surveillance, and on‑site security measures. It urged the authorities to shore up infrastructural and procedural safeguards so that public spaces are genuinely secure for women and children.
Consequently, the Supreme Court Registry has been instructed to file a suo motu public interest litigation on the matter and to place the issue on the court’s docket for a prompt hearing. The judges cautioned that mere expressions of solidarity are insufficient; concrete accountability and responsibility must be established.
Case Summary: Sleeper Bus Incident
According to reports, the first incident unfolded on 4 August 2026 when a 16‑year‑old Class‑11 student was traveling on a sleeper bus that runs between Greater Noida and Kashmere Gate, Delhi. Allegations claim that the bus driver and the conductor participated in a sexual assault against the minor.
Police have detained both accused individuals and have taken the bus into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
The teenager, a resident of Mainpuri, reportedly left home on 3 August without informing her family to visit a cousin in Noida’s Sector 63. The investigation is still underway.
The Supreme Court’s intervention has thrust the issue of women’s and children’s safety in public domains back into the national spotlight, emphasizing the urgent need for robust preventive mechanisms and stringent accountability.
