Lucknow – After a thorough aerial and on‑ground investigation of water‑logged areas surrounding the state capital, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a wide‑ranging flood‑control initiative. The flagship element is a raised embankment linking Faizullaganj with Naimish, designed to curb the recurring overflow of the Gomti River.
Embankment as a Green Flood Barrier
The proposed structure will double as a green corridor, with a paved roadway planned atop the elevated levee. Government teams have been tasked with a detailed top‑down survey of the Gomti’s banks and the preparation of a full‑scale project dossier. Complementary drainage channels and pumping stations will be installed to siphon rainwater that accumulates outside the protected zone, ensuring swift removal.
On‑Ground Relief Review
During a visit to the flood‑hit locality of Bakshi Ka Talab, the chief minister met with residents, inspected a temporary health camp, and supervised the distribution of emergency supplies. He ordered the relocation of families from vulnerable spots to provisional relief shelters set up in schools and marriage halls.
Support for Displaced Families
Camp officials are now required to serve hot meals twice a day, provide milk for children, and offer nutrient‑rich food for pregnant women. Livestock owners will receive fodder, and power‑deficient sites will be equipped with solar lanterns and Petromax lamps.
Compensation Measures
Households that suffered loss of life due to drowning or lightning will be granted an immediate cash assistance of ₹4 lakh. Families whose homes were completely destroyed and meet eligibility criteria will be allotted houses under existing state housing schemes. Agricultural losses—including crops and livestock—will be evaluated so that eligible farmers can claim compensation.
Relief Kits Containing 26 Essentials
Each affected household is receiving a kit with 26 essential items such as rice, wheat flour, potatoes, pulses, cooking oil, salt, spices and waterproofing material. The kits are intended to sustain families until normal supply chains are restored.
Security and Medical Provisions
The CM directed police, Home Guards, PRD personnel and local watchmen to patrol the camps and vacated homes, safeguarding property and preventing looting. Health units will keep anti‑snake‑venom and anti‑rabies injections ready, while dedicated medical and veterinary camps are being rolled out across the hardest‑hit areas.
Why the Floods Hit This Year
Intense rainfall over the Gomti’s upstream catchment—covering Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and even neighboring Nepal—raised river levels dramatically, submerging low‑lying districts around Lucknow. The Faizullaganj‑Naimish embankment is now positioned as a long‑term safeguard, promising not only flood mitigation but also improved connectivity via the road that will crown the levee.
