Comprehensive CCTV Rollout Around Taj Mahal

The Agra Development Authority has approved an extensive upgrade of video monitoring around the world‑renowned Taj Mahal. Ninety state‑of‑the‑art cameras will be mounted within a 500‑metre ring, creating a denser surveillance net for the monument’s immediate surroundings.

The project, estimated at roughly Rs 2.10 crore, is slated for completion within six months, with a tender already issued to attract qualified vendors.

Why This New Network Is Crucial

The additional cameras will concentrate on the “yellow zone” that surrounds the Taj Mahal, covering main thoroughfares, entry points and other high‑traffic areas that presently suffer from blind spots.

Broader visual coverage is expected to give security forces a clearer picture of on‑ground activity, enabling quicker responses to any suspicious or disruptive behaviour.

Strengthening Existing Infrastructure

The site already benefits from a CCTV framework installed during the 2016 Tajganj initiative, later complemented by smart poles equipped with cameras and public‑address systems.

Nonetheless, gaps remain in the current layout. The new batch of ninety units is designed to plug those holes, delivering a more seamless surveillance blanket.

Security duties are divided by zones: the monument itself lies in the “red zone,” guarded by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), while the surrounding 500‑metre “yellow zone” falls under the jurisdiction of local police and the Punjab and Chandigarh (PAC) forces.

Tourist Safety Takes Center Stage

Authorities expect the reinforced network to aid law‑enforcement and enhance the experience of the millions of visitors who flock to the site each year. Improved monitoring can curb unauthorised activities, ease crowd‑related congestion and deter incidents targeting tourists.

The upgrade also aims to keep a tighter watch on individuals known to harass or threaten visitors, further cementing the monument’s reputation as a safe destination.

Implementation Timeline

With the tender process now underway, the Agra Development Authority has instructed contractors to begin installation as soon as paperwork is cleared. The six‑month deadline underscores the urgency of reinforcing security around one of India’s most treasured heritage sites.

Once operational, the expanded system will provide a robust, real‑time view of activity around the Taj Mahal, strengthening both protection measures and overall site management.
