Jashpur: In a decisive move to upgrade the region’s fish‑farming sector, the State Fisheries Department rolled out a hands‑on training programme that blends science with practice, aiming to turn modest ponds into high‑yield, cash‑generating assets.
Science‑Driven Fish Farming Takes Center Stage
The three‑day intensive gathered three hundred farmers from every development block of Jashpur. Classroom sessions were interspersed with field excursions, allowing participants to witness modern aquaculture setups firsthand and learn how to replicate them locally.
Key modules covered pond‑level stewardship, selection of premium seed, balanced feeding regimes, and proactive disease management. Trainers stressed that disciplined oversight at each step can dramatically lift both output and income.
Live Demo of Pond‑Liner Technology
A highlight of the itinerary was a visit to a nearby fish‑farm that employs waterproof pond‑liners. Farmers observed the installation process, learned how liners stabilize water quality, and picked up maintenance tips that keep fish thriving.
Speakers emphasized that robust liners, paired with quality seed and rigorous management, form the backbone of a profitable pond operation.
Cage Culture Showcase at Rajpuri Reservoir
The delegation also travelled to Rajpuri Reservoir in Surguja district to explore cage culture – a system that suspends fish‑rearing cages in a larger water body. Participants watched live demonstrations, received a step‑by‑step briefing, and discussed how this method can diversify production and boost earnings.
This exposure illustrated how cage culture can complement traditional pond farming, opening fresh revenue streams for local growers.
The Full Modern Aquaculture Cycle
Over the course of the workshop, trainers walked farmers through every phase of the fish‑farming cycle, including:
- Selecting disease‑free, high‑performing seed and adopting advanced seed‑production techniques.
- Applying scientific pond‑management practices for optimal water conditions.
- Designing feeding schedules that meet nutritional needs while minimizing waste.
- Recognizing common fish ailments, preventing outbreaks, and implementing effective treatments.
Putting Knowledge Into Practice
Officials are confident that the practical insights gained will translate into measurable improvements on participants’ own farms. By embracing better pond upkeep, premium seed, balanced feeds, and swift disease response, farmers can raise production levels and enhance the profitability of their existing water resources.
"If more fish growers adopt these modern methods, Jashpur’s overall fish output will surge, securing a stronger and more reliable income for our aquaculture community," said Assistant Director of Fisheries Jitendra Kumar Paikra, who supervised the programme.
