Bareilly: The BJP’s latest Rajya Sabha roster omits Union Minister of State B. L. Verma, a move that has ignited a fresh round of political debate across Rohilkhand, particularly in Badaun and its neighbouring districts.

Lodh community leadership under the lens

Verma, a veteran leader from Badaun and a prominent voice of the Lodh caste, is due to complete his Rajya Sabha term in November. The party has instead promoted Uttar Pradesh minister and Aonla MLA Dharmapal Singh, a decision many observers interpret as a tactical pivot before the upcoming state assembly polls.

Originating from Jyora Parwala village in the Bilsi Assembly segment, Verma entered the Upper House in November 2020 and currently holds the portfolio of Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. His removal from the list has prompted questions about the BJP’s next moves in the region.

Political analysts argue that Singh’s nomination is designed to solidify the party’s hold on the Lodh vote bank while presenting another seasoned figure from the same community. Verma’s historic alliance with former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, coupled with his long‑standing rivalry with Kalyan’s son, ex‑Etah MP Rajveer Singh, adds further nuance to the intra‑caste contest.

By elevating Singh to the Rajya Sabha, the BJP may be seeking to create a unified Lodh front across western Uttar Pradesh.

Implications for Aonla’s political landscape

The reshuffle also reverberates in the Aonla constituency, a traditional bastion of Rajput influence. Party strategists might contemplate fielding a high‑profile Rajput candidate there in the forthcoming assembly election.

Having retained the Aonla seat for several terms, Dharmapal Singh’s promotion opens a strategic window for the BJP to rethink its candidate slate for the area, underscoring the continued importance of caste and regional balance in its electoral calculus.

Future prospects for BL Verma

As his Rajya Sabha tenure draws to a close, speculation swirls that Verma could re‑enter frontline politics through a direct electoral contest. Insiders suggest he may be earmarked for a legislative assembly seat in his home turf.

Verma’s stronghold lies in Ujhani, part of the Bilsi Assembly constituency, currently represented by BJP MLA Harish Shakya. Nearby Badaun city is represented by BJP MLA Mahesh Chandra Gupta. Deploying Verma in a local contest could trigger internal competition while capitalising on his organisational expertise for the party’s campaign.

Verma’s continued loyalty to the party

Despite being left out of the Rajya Sabha list, Verma has maintained a measured tone. He reiterated that his term ends in November and that he stands ready to accept any role the party assigns him.

"I remain a disciplined worker of the party and will shoulder any responsibility entrusted to me," he said, emphasizing his unwavering commitment.

These latest Rajya Sabha nominations have opened several avenues in Rohilkhand—from a reshuffling of local leadership to evolving caste dynamics and potential adjustments in assembly‑level candidate selection as Uttar Pradesh moves toward its next election.
