Clash Over Form 6 and Voter‑Roll Overhaul Intensifies

New Delhi – The standoff between the ruling BJP and the opposition INDIA coalition deepened on Tuesday after the BJP alleged that the Congress is weaponising a petition before the Election Commission. The party argues that the opposition’s demand for a probe into the voter‑registration mechanism is a calculated effort to boost Rahul Gandhi’s political comeback.

BJP Challenges Congress’ Interpretation of Supreme Court Remarks

National spokesperson Sambit Patra maintained that Congress is misreading the Supreme Court’s observations on Form 6, the application citizens file to be added to the electoral rolls. Patra clarified that the apex court has not branded the form unlawful; it merely ordered an inquiry into alleged tampering.

"The court’s direction is procedural, not a verdict of illegality," Patra told reporters.

Opposition’s Continuing Push on the CEC

Leaders of the INDIA bloc converged at the Election Commission’s New Delhi headquarters, seeking clarification from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar about the Special Intensive Revision exercise. They contend that changes to Form 6 were introduced without adequate oversight and demand greater transparency.

BJP Refutes Any Notion of Illegality

Patra emphasized that the Supreme Court notices are procedural safeguards, not a condemnation of wrongdoing. He pointed out that the Election Commission itself has affirmed that the statutory Form 6 remains unchanged and that the revision was carried out under decisions already sanctioned by the commission.

Congress’s Counter‑Narrative

The opposition insists that the purported modifications to Form 6 were irregular and that the CEC acted unilaterally. Rahul Gandhi has framed the controversy as a litmus test of the commission’s neutrality, while Congress calls for an independent audit of the voter‑roll update process.

Political Calculus Behind the Protest

Patra suggested that the demonstration is less about safeguarding electoral integrity and more about giving Rahul Gandhi a stage to re‑emerge nationally. He warned that targeting constitutional institutions could become a recurrent tactic for the opposition.

With both sides locked in their narratives, the Form 6 dispute is poised to dominate political conversation as the next election approaches.
