Deadly River Bathing Incident at Sur Ghat
While observing the Jitiya festivities, two eighteen‑year‑old women, Kajal Kumari and Pinky Kumari of Zakheera, slipped into the stronger currents of the Yamuna at Sur Ghat, close to the Wazirabad bridge, and were pulled under. The pair had come with their relatives to perform the customary river‑bath ritual.
Rescue Dive and Body Retrieval
Bystanders shouted for assistance as the girls disappeared beneath the water. Local rescue divers responded instantly, combing the area until the bodies were located and brought ashore, though the victims had already succumbed to the river’s force.
Police Response and Autopsy
Officers from Timarpur police station arrived shortly after, secured the remains, and sent them for post‑mortem examination.
“The girls entered a deeper stretch of the river during the bathing rite and tragically drowned,” explained North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt.
An official inquiry has been launched to determine the exact circumstances that led to the drownings.
Relatives Demand Better Ghat Safety
In the aftermath, the families of Kajal and Pinky have raised serious doubts about the safety infrastructure at Sur Ghat. They claim the hazardous section lacks proper barricades, clear warning signs, and on‑site security to prevent entry into dangerous waters.
Police officials have promised a thorough review of existing safety measures and to address the gaps highlighted by the grieving relatives.
