New Delhi – On 6 October, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that left‑handed opening batter Smriti Mandhana will take over as the permanent captain of the Indian women’s side, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur.

Mandhana’s Rise on the International Stage

Since breaking onto the scene in 2013, Mandhana has evolved into one of the most consistent run‑scorers in women’s cricket, representing India across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She has already captained India in 18 T20 Internationals and four One‑Day Internationals and served as vice‑captain for several campaigns. The board cited her blend of experience and deep familiarity with the squad as decisive factors behind the appointment.

WPL Success with Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Mandhana’s leadership credentials are also evident in franchise cricket. As the skipper of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, she guided the side to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and again in 2026, cementing her reputation as a shrewd tactician and motivator.

Kaur’s Enduring Impact

Harmanpreet Kaur will remain a regular member of the playing XI but will hand over the captaincy. Under her stewardship, India clinched its first Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and captured gold at the Asian Games, while captaining the side in all three formats.

The Road Ahead

Mandhana’s first assignment as full‑time captain arrives with a three‑match T20I series against Zimbabwe, followed by three ODIs, starting on 16 October. The BCCI expressed confidence that her extensive international exposure, prior leadership experience, and proven WPL success will propel the team to new heights.
