Congress Announces Its Line‑up for the Maharashtra Legislative Council Elections
The party has officially disclosed three aspirants for the biennial polls to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Two seasoned members are seeking a fresh mandate, and a newcomer has been fielded for the Amravati Teachers’ constituency.
Returning Incumbents and a First‑time Contender
Abhijit Wanjari will again contest the Nagpur Division Graduates’ seat, while Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar is set to run for the Pune Division Teachers’ seat. Both are sitting MLCs whose terms lapse in December 2026.
Joining them is Aditi Pohare, who will vie for the Amravati Division Teachers’ constituency – marking her debut in a council race.
Five Seats Up for Grabs
The upcoming election covers five constituencies: three Graduates’ seats – Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune and Nagpur – and two Teachers’ seats – Amravati and Pune. All incumbent terms conclude on 6 December 2026.

Coordination Within the MVA Alliance
The announcements arrive as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) – comprising Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar) and Shiv Sena (UBT) – continues internal deliberations on seat‑sharing for the council polls. While each party releases its own roster, the alliance has pledged to harmonise its strategy ahead of the October vote.
As the nomination deadline looms, the field for the five council seats is expected to sharpen, setting the stage for a closely watched contest.
